E-sports (eSport) is a trend, especially among young people, and the players of these sports are respected and as influential as celebrities in many other fields. Sports, entertainment, culture…
But few people would think that eSports can include sports beyond video games, until it is known recently that an eSport tournament called The Financial Modeling World Cup (FMWC) is held – where the participating players will compete on the Microsoft Excel office application.
FMWC has a total prize pool of $20,000 (100% sponsored by Microsoft), of which the winning team receives $5,000. The event will be held annually and this year has 128 contestants, from many regions of the world such as Africa, Asia-Pacific, North America, South America, and Europe.
Not playing games on Excel, the players will compete by analyzing and handling different situations on this platform and of course, all will be presented in Excel.
Each situation is usually a main problem (1 to 5 sheets long), a list of 6-15 questions that the candidate must answer. Participants’ task is to answer all questions, create a reasonable financial model with a maximum length of 1 sheet.
The competitive atmosphere and competitiveness are the factors that make FMWC an eSport tournament. Like many other events, FMWC also has commentators and a passionate audience.
