Follow Neowin, motherboards using Intel’s 600 series chipset for Alder Lake-S offer DDR5 and DDR4 options. However, at the moment, DDR5 RAM sticks are almost impossible to buy because of low inventory and expensive prices, even on eBay there are places selling DDR5 RAM kits for up to $ 5,000.
Asus adapters are very useful when the price of DDR5 is very expensive
That’s why, for those who bought a DDR5 motherboard, Asus has invented a new adapter that can fit a DDR4 kit into a DDR5 motherboard.
The product is certainly interesting, although it may not be practical in the event that air freshener users get in the way of this installation. That’s because the adapter is quite tall as it has to fulfill many of the power supply functions on the adapter PCB itself. It is known that DDR5 motherboards lack such functionality due to the power management integrated circuits (PMICs) located on the DDR5 modules themselves.
Adapters are essential, although both have a 288 pin count, the pinouts and module keys of the two types of DRAM are different.
At the moment the adapter is still just a prototype, but it will be interesting to see if Asus actually makes it to market, and how much it costs.
